I'm on my third cup of tea. It's still raining. Is there a connection?
@MummaBear Is it raining cats and dogs?
That's a strange expression that we had to learn in school.
I wonder if people really say that it's raining cats and dogs in these days or if they say something else. Like it's pouring?
I think the, It's pissing down, sounds similar to something we would say.
The references to Ducks and frogs are self explanatory while the cats and dogs is a mystery to me.
Now I begun thinking that in a country where rain is very common. There will naturally be more and broader expressions for describing the rain.
Perhaps it has to do with the UK equivalent to the metric system.
Here we say 1.5 meter. In USA they say, smaller than a deer, bigger than a bicycle.
Cats and dogs. It means bigger than usual raindrops. Still smaller than cars and horses?
The pound inch miles dozen system
I like that there are many systems. Because it makes me having to constantly calculate and compare.
I like the metric system for weight, volume and speed.
But for nautical I only use Knots and Distance. I think it should be illegal to use the metric system while traveling at sea.
Thus I also prefer to measure my boat in feet.
Yes, for cooking I want the metric system. And when I have to lok up a pound or something I get all kind of different results. Sometimes more confusing than fun.
Cooking should be Liter deciliter milliliter
We also use centi-liters in Europe.
And table spoons, and krd-mått unt so weither.
Swedish: kryddmått
Norwegian: kryddermål
Measure appropriate for spices. Often one mL or cubic centimeter-cc.

Edit: Strangely enough, this Norwegian article used an image of a Swedish spice measuring spoon.
@EvolLove @MummaBear @inscius do you use liters for dry volumes? (Eg for sugar)
As an American, I don't think I've ever seen (or noticed?) a metric dry volume measurement.
@thoughtcriminal
Grams for dry weight. Liters for liquids.
@EvolLove @MummaBear @inscius
@thoughtcriminal @EvolLove @inscius no that's crazy
Dry goods is pounds or kilo.
@MummaBear @EvolLove @inscius so you are weighing it out, not using measuring cups?
@thoughtcriminal @MummaBear @EvolLove @inscius yes, everything is weighted out
We don't use cups over here so it makes following American recipes that talk about everything in cups difficult 'cos we don't know the exact quantities
@carolen @MummaBear @EvolLove @inscius fascinating, I just figured the rest of the world was using different units, but the same process.
I did always wonder about recipes that call for grams of flour, but I assumed that was because flour settles a lot (this is why you sift, or at least fluff it before measuring). So weight would be more accurate/reproducible.
@thoughtcriminal Flour is better with weighing. I rarely use recipes when baking, so... @carolen @MummaBear @EvolLove
@inscius @thoughtcriminal @carolen @EvolLove I bake every weekend.
