its getting to the point where we're considering states like colorado as viable to move to, obviously we'll be in the hinterlands and not the faggy cities but i dunno, gotta get outta this doomed place

@dictatordave

I SUPPOSE we'll welcome you...

... but don't tell anybody else. We have our hands full trying to deal with the Californians.

Hinterlands is best flavor and value, generally speaking.

I'd not live in the metro area if I didn't have kids/grandkids that I get along with pretty well. Were I a GRUMPY person (like SOME people), I'd be surrounded by large trees and some water and have to drive a bit to get groceries, preferably without having to pass anybody on the road on the way.

@GluedToTheScreen i was thinking some place south of brekanridge but not as far as like great sand dune

or maybe just west of pueblo into the mountains some

or maybe out toward rifle

my biggest thing about these lefty states that have gone absolutely wild is what they may try to impose on my children and then i'll have to break out the magazines they def say i can't have there lol
@dictatordave @GluedToTheScreen You're talking about Southpark then. Anything North of Salida anyways. South of that is Arkansas Valley. Once upon a time I had some property NE of Alamosa on the way to GSDNP. Desolate, to say the least. Probably should hung on to that, it was on the corner of two roads. Likely that there is some sort of store or campground there now, which is what I was thinking of, but decided to sell it after I had moved on.

@Mister_Sunshine @dictatordave

Took the grandkids to Casa Bonita just a couple of Saturdays ago...

... a DOUBLE DIVE!

@GluedToTheScreen @Mister_Sunshine duh duh duh duh duh
casa bonita casa bonita
duh duh duh duh duh duh
@GluedToTheScreen @dictatordave Been there, done that. Amazing that is still around, it's always been considered a hokey tourist trap, but I guess that's it's charm. It really is a great place to take a date.
@Mister_Sunshine @GluedToTheScreen so where are the contaminated 'chemical valley' areas of co that i want to stay away from?
i know some places like durango have insane homeless populations and i'd like to stay away from them
i guess i have to deal with a bunch of illegals probably there now too

so whats the chances that i can buy some raw land, and put up a small homestead *cough compound with a bunker cough* and not be bothered by the state if i want to home school my kids and be left the fuck alone, should i bother with co or move on to northern nevada, or utah or idaho or wyoming
@dictatordave @GluedToTheScreen Wherever you see bright red and yellow steaks in the mountains there you are likely to find toxic waste heaps and ponds. Near Leadville there is a town (might just be a spot on the map now) called Climax that has some of the prettiest crazy color toxic pools you will see anywhere, unless they have cleaned that up. Even Telluride has a nice big toxic tailings heap on the east end of town.
@dictatordave @GluedToTheScreen double reply -
>not be bothered by the state if i want to home school my kids and be left the fuck alone, should i bother with co or move on to northern nevada, or utah or idaho or wyoming
My choice was to move on. Politics in CO are out of control. The Mrs. wants to head to MT, but she has only been there in the summer. I keep telling her about this "Winter" thing that is a bit intense there. We are probably going to stay in AZ when we call it quits with the working stuff- up on the rim somewhere. Some of the counties up there are pretty lax on building permits and such. Just avoid Pima, Maricopa, and Yavapai county and you are probably ok here.
@Mister_Sunshine @GluedToTheScreen yea we'd had the same talk about MT, mine also doesn't really like real winter which is why northern vermont or nh probably wouldn't work for her, same goes for north idaho i dont think she'd like the climate year round.

we talked about the sedona area, loved that and out toward grand canyon seems awesome for like homesteading

northeast utah up toward idaho and co borders looks nice, like enough trees so its not a crazy beaten on desert
@Mister_Sunshine @GluedToTheScreen i appreciate your input, seriously, we're talking about going to devil's tower for a climb for my 40th next year so we're going to look out that way as well, maybe south dakota as well
Just walking to the approach is enough for me. Did it in cowboy boots and jeans
There's a theory (that I can't find because Google has become shit) that it's what's left of a giant that once roamed the earth. It supposed to be part of his petrified leg.
Probably those silly ass featherheads

@Humpleupagus

I had not heard the LEG story...

... there have been many hypotheses about it being the petrified base of a very large TREE.

I've always considered the tree idea possible, maybe ALL things were bigger in ancient times.

@Evil_Bender @Mister_Sunshine @dictatordave

@Evil_Bender

obscure, and thanks...
... Norse?

still, geography has changed bigly over great periods of time, so who's to say what is what?

@Humpleupagus @dictatordave @Mister_Sunshine

@Evil_Bender

Right.

Devil's Tower is in Wyoming.

Are you suggesting the Norsemen were here and it might be the origin of that mythology?

Or maybe one of the roots of that tree has surfaced in WY?

or something?

@Humpleupagus @dictatordave @Mister_Sunshine

It was on its world tour when Paul Bunyon chopped it down.

.... a threeeee hour tourrrr, a threeeee hour tourrrrrrr

@GluedToTheScreen @Evil_Bender @Humpleupagus @dictatordave I was going from memory regarding the hex columns in Scotland. I knew it was in an Opera- I was thinking it was Peer Gynt, but it's from Mendelssohn

youtube.com/watch?v=_XD8JFc_1wo
youtube.com/watch?v=bcCA3nQw0Uo
@GluedToTheScreen @Humpleupagus @Evil_Bender @dictatordave The Hexagonal nature of Devil's Tower rules out the possibility of it being an actual tree. In Yellowstone there is another place with these giant Hexagonal basalt columns that has some sort of "Devil's Tree name.
And- I'm not referring to the actual giant petrified trees in Yellowstone. Those are clearly trees.
@Mister_Sunshine @GluedToTheScreen @Humpleupagus @Evil_Bender yea there's a waterfall in iceland with the same sort of formations, definitely basalt crystal structures
@dictatordave @GluedToTheScreen @Humpleupagus @Evil_Bender Scotland has some of those volcanic hexagonal basalt spires, too. Or maybe Ireland. They are on the coast somewhere. They are mentioned in some opera, Peer Gynt maybe.
@Evil_Bender @Humpleupagus @GluedToTheScreen @dictatordave >Devil's Tower is a butte
Not really, Buttes are a product of a plateau that has been eroded. DT is the core of an ancient volcano.
It's obviously a gigantic petrified tree from the Triassic period 🧐
@Mister_Sunshine @Evil_Bender @Humpleupagus @GluedToTheScreen that's what my money is on as well
the core of a volcano
and i love volcanos and love climbing them
so this will make a very nice one for the list
The way I understood it was when Yellowstone erupted 700,000 years ago this is where the magma flow reached and tried to push out. But it mixed with some type of mineral that caused the block appearance.
@Evil_Bender @GluedToTheScreen @Mister_Sunshine but you did it in style and that's what really matters

probably doing the durrance route with my long time climbing partner, its only like 7 pitches of moderate climbing but its crack and big block so figure it'll be a cruiser
We tool all the boys one year. It's just what I was wearing. We climbed up the rocks a little ways before we stopped. I have pictures but my kids are in it.
I love devil's tower, I visit it anytime I go through Wyoming! I wish I could live in Hulett if I ever retired.
The first time I went, it was late in the afternoon. I smoked a joint on the drive through the park to the parking lot. The sun was setting, and as I walked up the hill I realized everyone was leaving and driving away. Suddenly, I was all alone and it was completely dark up there. I marched up the path as best I could, listening to the cars driving off into the distance fading away until it was silent. Another 15-20 minutes stumbling up the trail in the darkness, I started hearing noises coming from everywhere but like miles away. I decided I didn't want to be the only human alone in the woods with the bears and cougars, so I left 😖
We go during sturgis every year. I goto any national park I see, simple as. Why not I get in free.
@dictatordave @GluedToTheScreen My pleasure. Talking about this type of thing dredges up a lot of (mostly) fond memories. Feel free to ask about anywhere near the Rockies from border to border and I am likely familiar with the area. I have worked and/or been Gold Prospecting just about everywhere west of the divide at one time or another. WY anywhere other than near Yellowstone is often nice and always under appreciated (cheaper). Around Gillette is super nice, and then farther easinto SD the Black Hills is nice, too.
@Mister_Sunshine @GluedToTheScreen yea that's one thing i figure i can't get away from is like mine tailings

its why we're considering the hills of wv to be a bust

if we're going to move far we may as well move really far

muleshoe sounds nice
@dictatordave @GluedToTheScreen The West slope of the Rockies in ID is really nice and the weather is a lot better than east of there in MT. I did some work in Sand Point once and really like the area. That's on the list if we decide to not stick here. Since you are in your family rearing and working years, a big question is what you are going to do for work. This probably means being near some trendy tourist town if you want to cash in on the construction/hospitality type of thing. If you are Tech and can telework I guess anywhere will be fine.
@Mister_Sunshine @GluedToTheScreen i'm a cad guy and she's a nurse so worst case she would only have to work a couple days a month and i could either work remote or do something else

shit man i'm fine with being shoeless and dirt poor, the east coast has completely sucked any zest for modernity out of me

i'll eventually talk her into a sod house lol

but that's the thing i pointed out to her on our search that if we got to a high, elevation or latitude and east of some mountains we'll get good weather for things we like to do, which are mostly outdoors, climbing and hiking and shit like that

i dont mind drilling a sand point well with a rented jack hammer if i have to

@dictatordave @Mister_Sunshine

IF it's in the drier Southwest, I always thought you could build a big adobe/haybale mansion for cheap...

... but this modern gadget could get you started. Maybe plug several together like legos?

watch the video

@GluedToTheScreen @dictatordave Adobe is a massive amount of labor, and of course, most areas will not let you build an actual adobe home anymore. They will force you to construct a reinforced concrete structure and then infill with Adobe- if you are lucky. Earthship style rammed earth in tire (with rebar) is pretty cool and has some precedent with building inspectors people might want to consider if they are long on labor/time and short on funds. I have worked on a few, albeit in the finish stages, but I paid attention to the structure on them while they were going up, so I am familiar with it. This video from Dennis Weaver, who was the driving force behind the Earthship phenomenon, is a good watch. I actually knew him pretty well. Great guy.

@Mister_Sunshine

cool, I vaguely remember that project of his (but was always a fan)...

... I've also seen a YT where some off-the-grid couple are trying to homestead. They have chosen to make their home and side buildings with big, thick walls that are

long plastic(?) tubes that they fill with dirt and tamp down, work around walls, another layer, etc.

climate is always a driver when building "homes"

@dictatordave

@Mister_Sunshine @dictatordave

IDK if it's any good, I just enjoy seeing others work...

... and let my mind consider the possibilities.

Some variation on Weaver's concept?

EarthBags

youtube.com/watch?v=n_yAY1Ybfm

@GluedToTheScreen @Mister_Sunshine yea we're considering incorporating passive solar sections like an earthship if not a full on partial underground place if the the locale allows such things, if not we could just build without a permit, we dont plan to sell and want this to be a generational home we build anyway, fuck the authorities

i was actually thinking about renting one of those packed earth block machines as well

@dictatordave @Mister_Sunshine

I've always thought that, IF you have the right layout of land...

... I would have about HALF of the house/building carved out of or in to a hill.

@GluedToTheScreen @dictatordave Rammed Earth in general is pretty cool, but again, most building departments are going to force you to go with reinforced concrete structure with RE infill- which they will also likely force you to put a certain amount of Portland cement in. ICFs (Insulated Oncrete Forms), i.e. the giant Legos you fill with (reinforced) concrete are a simple and fast way to make a home, if not the cheapest. I have a lot of experience with these, but have yet to build an entire home with them. Someday probably. For anyone interested in alternative building techniques, I highly recommend Alternative Homebuilding by Mike McClintock. Classic and covers a wide variety of methods. I just picked up a replacement for one that got ripped off a long time ago. Was all of $10 - for a Hardcover first edition even. 👍
#Homesteading

@dictatordave @Mister_Sunshine

IDK about your concerns specifically...

... have read about wild/sad situations around the state. Where-ever you consider, ask about

MINES - source of many chemical headaches, especially abandoned ones. talk about legal snafus.

WATER - see Mines.

@Mister_Sunshine @GluedToTheScreen @dictatordave The South Park guys bought it when it went bankrupt if you don’t know the lore, that’s why.
