I have been working remote for the past 3 years and am generally more productive than I had been in an office. There are some trade-offs for sure - and I have no strong desire to go back to an office. BUT I can support this a) for federal employees & b) at the current place in time. My hypothesis is that there is a LOT of waste in the fed govt and likely a lot of remote workers that are not held to the same standards/expectations in private industry. This should help thin them out.

Ok, someone also speaking with experience. That's good and good you have a favorable WFH situation. If those things are true then you know that's a management faux pas. Whether it was in the vetting and/or hiring process that they did not properly hire.
