@RoboftheVolcano there are some jobs you have to get a degree for that are worth it. Usually in science, medical, law, or engineering.
BUT most people would be better off learning a trade or doing an apprenticeship.
@Richard Lots of idiots have huge debt for worthless degrees.
@RoboftheVolcano tell me about it. I said most. Lol
@Richard @RoboftheVolcano those apprenticeship wages are pretty generous. I’m currently finishing up my in class portion of my 4th year electrician apprenticeship training, and there’s guys still making less than 20-25 an hour pulling loomex in houses and apartments
@Judgement_Dave @RoboftheVolcano true, but pay is better than debt.
@Richard @RoboftheVolcano I suppose you’re right about that.
But working with the people who would otherwise be getting a liberal arts degree isn’t fun either.
@Judgement_Dave @Richard I think it depends where in the Country you are. I am in Hawaii our cost of living is pretty high.
@RoboftheVolcano @Richard I’m in Vancouver Canada and I’d like to echo this point as well.
@Judgement_Dave @Richard @RoboftheVolcano
Pay is definitely area dependent. I was a Union Carpenter up in Chicago and our rate was $50/hour
When I moved to TN, rate for journeymen is $25-26…….which fueled my decision to get out of the union and do my own thing :)
I remember seeing a chart where Ca and NY had the highest union wages for journeymen in any trade.
@KobaApeLeader1 @Richard @RoboftheVolcano
I’m in British Columbia Canada. Union wage is around 48 for a j man sparky. I’ve heard San Francisco j man rate is like 75 us. I’m sure it’s regional as well as what cost of living is.
@RoboftheVolcano lol at college costing 9000 a year
@thisisthebreath In State it's possible.
@RoboftheVolcano that’s how much my instate tuition was in the early 90s. And didn’t include food housing books etc
@RoboftheVolcano nobody gonna question $39k in raises over 3 years? That’s some bullshit right there.
@RoboftheVolcano Honestly, this is pretty spot on! I work in networking myself, and with no degree what so ever, I make roughly $40k/yr, and for $200 I could get a CCNA, coupled with my work experience so the field, I could bounce that up to $70k/yr. At which point I could pay my own way through college.
Not to mention many people learn so much better from hands on training vs classroom theory.
@RoboftheVolcano@noauthority.social You get a 100% raise over the course of 4 years as an apprentice?
