@MK2boogaloo @histoire why is macOS for people who fear technology? It's literally Unixoid and they tech Unix at universities for computer science and similar.
@Tadano @MK2boogaloo @histoire lol there's a reason i have Linux on my pc I built myself. And then I also have a mac mini. But that is only rented... I'm gonna give it back and swap it with an M3 model. I don't use it often because I dislike the GUI. Its like a really limited version of Gnome. And I really like Gnome. So. I am annoyed and hate mac.
@Tadano @MK2boogaloo @histoire I don't use it super often though. But there are some programs that only run on mac. Genuinely I don't even shut it down lol. I use it for. Crypto mining when I don't use it because that thing genuinely uses I think like 12 watts. I forgot. But I measured it. It's insane.
And yea because it's rented and I'll swap it out soon.... Actually really cheap for me too.
@sysrq @Tadano @MK2boogaloo @histoire yea no way I would spend that much money every year on a new computer or a new folding phone.
This is way cheaper.
@sysrq @Tadano @MK2boogaloo @histoire yea right. You give me 2k Ever year for a insane new folding phone then. That's fine
@sysrq @Tadano @MK2boogaloo @histoire well. The mobile productivity boost of a folding phone is Really really useful to me. Splitting the screen on a regular phone I never did because it's too cramped.
You show me a 100€ folding phone.
Also currently you need a new one like each year. Because the screen just breaks. Which is fine too because it's rented. Literally any damage is covered.
@sysrq @Tadano @MK2boogaloo @histoire if I didn't want a phone that turns into a tablet. Yea I would just have a 100 or 200€ phone or something. But that would impact what I use a phone for now too much.
@MK2boogaloo @Tadano @sysrq @histoire I don't have my computer with me at work for example. That's why it's useful to have baiscllay a tablet in your pocket.
@MK2boogaloo @Tadano @sysrq @histoire no I mean personal. Things why would they give me a pc for personal shit on break time.
@MK2boogaloo @Tadano @sysrq @histoire when I need to SSH into a VPS for example. Oh shit that's also rented. How dare I not own a data center. Or screw around with some docker container on my nas. Then not only having a big screen is nice. Having a screen big enough to allow multiple things next to each other is really nice too. Same thing with emails or doing things with money. Putting the banking app next to emails so I can just see who to send money too or whatever.
@MK2boogaloo @Tadano @sysrq @histoire not really. Yea I don't have every fucking IBAN memorised in my head. I just like having a big screen. I like to early adopt new shit and find out it's strengths and weaknesses.
@MK2boogaloo @Tadano @sysrq @histoire yea I could do that. Very correct. But that's boring and how everyone uses their phones. Thats not new exciting and fun. I like tech that is new and weird and quirky. Not the established standard.
@MK2boogaloo @Tadano @sysrq @histoire well then OK. Show me a folding 100 dollar phone. Or. Some other new screen formfactor.
@MK2boogaloo @Tadano @sysrq @histoire yea I do. One half for one ssh session. The other one for a ssh session with a man page or like discord chat to see what's going on on a game server so I know what config file I broke yesterday or whatever.
@MK2boogaloo @Tadano @sysrq @histoire but also. I told you. I have a folding phone because it's new. I like early adopting things to find out the strengths and weaknesses. A folding phone is actually really crap for many reasons. But I love using it and finding out which app is worthless on the big screen.
@MK2boogaloo @Tadano @sysrq @histoire I really don't think so. 100 dollar phone doesnt seem like it has enough space for 2ssh connections and the keyboard.
@MK2boogaloo @Tadano @sysrq @histoire no I have a laptop. But the fucking laptop does not fit into my pocket.
@MK2boogaloo @Tadano @sysrq @histoire right. Do You carry your laptop Literally everywhere you go?
@MK2boogaloo @Tadano @sysrq @histoire well what. I'm sorry I do. Things like running game servers. Or a nextcloud instance thst other people use.
With these things there are cases where immediate action is very very good.
@MK2boogaloo @Tadano @sysrq @histoire again though. Am I gonna have a laptop while running in the forest? No. Did the game server fuck up and I need to run a rollback command? Yea. That happened. And then I did that
@MK2boogaloo @Tadano @sysrq @histoire actually i had to go count. I have 4 Laptops all with different random OSs like if I want to use 9front for some reason. The thinkpad yoga being my favourite although it needs a new battery.
6 computers if you count the nas, the mac mini and powermac g4 as computers.
A raspberry pi and like couple of retro consoles.
3 VPSs.
Oh and a used old HP server but I haven't turned that on yet.
@MK2boogaloo @Tadano @sysrq @histoire as I wrote. There are no cheap folding phones yet.
@MK2boogaloo @Tadano @sysrq @histoire you don't have a PC everywhere you go. Being able to multitask. Or even just single task on a big screen is very good.
It's so good I even put up with the insane shit cameras on the z fold series. Initially I rented it just so I could check it out if it made sense to me. If I liked a folding screen. Yes.
@MK2boogaloo @Tadano @sysrq @histoire just even the fact you can prop up put the phone into like an L. Shape and use it kinda like a built in tripod is very good. Makes my workday a lot easier so I don't need someone standing on one end of the machine looking at the screen of something. Or at the IO of a PLC while I am pressing a switch or something.
@MK2boogaloo @Tadano @sysrq @histoire I work as an electrician in maintenance having to repair machines. So Actually for my job the important bit is the built in propping up of the camera safely. Just set the phone down looking at some lights on a plc. Walk 50 metres away and press. Some button and see if the input works this time.
@MK2boogaloo @Tadano @sysrq @histoire book doesn't help me to put watch youtube while also having a messaging app open.
@MK2boogaloo @Tadano @histoire I do have multiple PCs. My main one with a ryzen 3900x and a 7900xtx in it. Running tumbleweed BTW.
And then an older Amd system I run TrueNAS Scale on now.
Also a thinkpad running Ubuntu but I'll put some bad on it soon.
And a mini PC that currently runs nothing.
@MK2boogaloo @Tadano @histoire no I don't rent a mac book. A mac mini.
I am smoking nothing. I told you I need it for programs that literally I can not use on Linux.
What the Linux Alternative to Descript? Nothing. It doesn't have one
@MK2boogaloo @Tadano @histoire OK. Please point me to apple M processor emulators? Because My x86 chip can't magically turn into apple silicon. So no you can't put it in a vm
@MK2boogaloo @Tadano @histoire because old macs Are slow and shitty and can't run many software anymore. And they also don't use use 10 watts.
@MK2boogaloo @Tadano @histoire well yes the new ones are a lot more superior. Due to the M series chips. Why would anyone still write software targeting Intel?
